The benefits of doing Febfast

Thinking about doing Febfast? Then this article is for you!

Thinking about doing Febfast? Then this article is for you!

In addition to ditching the booze how about implementing some of these simple strategies and easily accessible foods into your life to give the liver that little bit of extra support that (after the silly season) it so lovingly deserves.

Use this time to detoxify

The Liver is the master organ in the body for detoxification. Medications, environmental toxins, carbohydrates, fats, protein and hormones are all metabolised via the liver. Our liver is important for bile production and for the storage of glycogen, vitamin A, D, B12, iron, magnesium, copper and zinc.

When the liver is in disharmony and in need of support people may experience symptoms such as skin problems, fatigue, pre-menstrual syndrome, fat intolerance, constipation, headaches, poor digestion and intolerances.

Foods and tips your liver will be thankful for.

Get zesty, both lemon juice and the zest of lemon support enzymes needed for liver detoxification as well as provide a great source of vitamin C, add lemon juice to salads and enjoy a warm glass of water with lemon upon arising.

Increase the number of cruciferous vegetables you consume

Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, kale, bok choy, cabbage and brussel sprouts as these foods support phase one and two detoxification.

Eat bitter greens

Bitter greens such as kale, dandelion greens, mustard greens & rocket support bile production and digestion. Add greens to salads & smoothies.

Include amino acids from good quality protein

Good quality protein contains amino acids which have an essential role in supporting liver detoxification pathways, organic eggs, wild caught fish, grass fed meats, legumes, tempeh, nuts, seeds, quality protein powders are some great sources.

Fibre is key

Soluble fibre helps reduce the burden on the liver as fibre will bind to toxins and support elimination. Incorporate chia seeds, oats, legumes and more fruit and vegetables.

Forget the late snack attack

Skip the late night snacks. Between 11pm and 3 am is when the liver regenerates itself and if it is busy still processing foods or alcohol, it can disrupt this process, causing you to feel tired and exhausted the next day.

Go chemical free as much as you can

Reduce the toxic burden on the liver by swapping cleaning & self-care products to chemical free options. Eliminate processed foods and reduce alcohol or coffee intake. Looking for some coffee alternatives? Try a golden turmeric latte, dandelion latte or a green tea matcha latte, all some delicious options which will please both your taste buds and your liver.

Magnesium is your allier

Magnesium is involved in many biochemical processes and is a co-factor to support liver detoxification, foods rich in magnesium include pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, spinach, cacao powder, brown rice and bananas.

Antioxidant rich foods are essential

Antioxidant rich foods are protective against free radicals and oxidative stress. Opt for a rainbow of bright coloured fruits and vegetables, in particular berries such as goji berries, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries and blackberries.
